Shopify E-Commerce Design Awards 2016

Written by Francesca

We’re super excited to announce that Series Eight received “Best Homepage” for the Shopify E-Commerce Design Awards 2016 for GOBAG, an immersive website we created earlier this year for UK based adventure bag company. It was chosen from thousands of nominations for which just four awards were presented for Best Mobile UX, Best Product Page, Best Overall E-Commerce Design and ours, Best Homepage design. If you fancy reading our full interview from the Shopify blog, you can do so here.

So what did winning this award mean for us?

Being a relatively young design studio, we were honoured to receive this sort of recognition for our progression into the e-commerce sector. On top of that, we were being whisked to New York City to receive creative mentorship from some of the industry's finest.

New York 2016 Series Eight

The trip

Not even the worse case of jet lag could get in the way of diving straight into NYC. After some great tacos in Gotham market and a few flat whites, we were pretty much good to go. We met our fellow awardees along with our two lovely Shopify hosts Keir Whitaker - Partner Growth and Simon Heaton - Content Marketing Lead, along with our amazingly wise mentors: Verne Ho - Director of Design at Shopify, Lea Hickman VP of Enterprise Products at InVision, Oliver Lindberg - Editor of Net mag, Aarron Walter - VP of Design Education at Invision. There was a wealth of information learnt and discussed through presentations and one on ones - mixed in with a lot of awesome food, a visit to the MoMa and an interactive theatre experience called Sleep No More. And ofcourse, a trip to New York is not complete without the obligatory Artichokes pizza, a mad milkshake and our favourite Mexican restaurant La Esquina. All of which you can work off after a long walk across the High Line.

"A great homepage should draw you in and make you hungry for more. GOBAG's beautiful illustrations, subtle transitions, detailed photography, and informative product content did just that. The homepage is a clear reflection of the care and passion that went into the bag itself, which left me not only falling in love with the product, but also with the brand.” Verne Ho Director of Design at Shopify

What we learnt

There was a lot of valuable information shared but there were some significant points discussed that best applied to us as a team, here are the snippets:

  • Establish and constantly revisit the goal in a project - L. Hickman
  • Make emotionally charged, empathetic design be at the core of your work - A. Walter
  • Use content to help users talk around your product - O. Lindberg
  • Make sure you have consistency in your routine - V. Ho

We really want to thank the Shopify hosts and mentors for such a meaningful and memorable learning experience and for being just plain awesome people in general. Thank you!
